MANAMA, Sept 12: Bahrain said on Saturday it will not participate in a proposed ministerial meeting on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz or in any multilateral meeting involving Iran until diplomatic relations between Manama and Tehran are restored.
The Bahraini Foreign Ministry said the kingdom had taken the position after reports circulated in media outlets and on social media about a proposed ministerial meeting on the Strait of Hormuz.
“In light of what has been circulated by media outlets and social media platforms regarding a proposed ministerial meeting on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, the Kingdom of Bahrain will not participate in it and will not be party to any collective meeting involving Iran before diplomatic relations between the two countries are restored,” the ministry said in a statement.
Bahrain said the position had previously been communicated through official channels to Oman, which has been involved in efforts to facilitate dialogue.
The ministry stressed that its decision does not diminish Bahrain’s appreciation for Oman’s efforts or its commitment to dialogue as a means of resolving disputes.
The statement came after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said early Saturday that foreign ministers from Arab states would meet in Muscat on Monday to sign an agreement establishing a joint Iran-Oman shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Bahrain and Iran do not currently have diplomatic relations, and Manama has made their restoration a condition for participating in collective meetings involving Tehran.
