MANAMA, April 28: A top criminal court in Bahrain has sentenced five individuals to life imprisonment and acquitted one in two cases involving alleged links to a foreign intelligence network tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, authorities said on Tuesday.

According to the Deputy Chief of Terrorist Crimes, the Supreme Criminal Court found six defendants, four Bahraini nationals and two Afghan nationals, guilty of coordinating with the Iranian organization to carry out hostile and criminal acts aimed at harming Bahrain’s national interests. In addition to life sentences for five of the accused, the court ordered the confiscation of materials used in the crimes and ruled that the two Afghan nationals be deported after serving their sentences.

Investigations by the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science revealed that one Afghan suspect had been recruited by the group to conduct surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations inside Bahrain. Authorities said he was tasked with monitoring and photographing sensitive and vital facilities and collecting information in exchange for financial payments.

The suspect later recruited another individual to assist in the operations, expanding the network’s activities, officials said. Both were arrested in possession of equipment allegedly used in carrying out the surveillance tasks.

The case underscores ongoing security concerns in Bahrain over foreign-linked plots and espionage activities, with authorities reiterating their commitment to countering threats to national security.
