MANAMA, Aug 24: A Bahrain court has fined one person BD100,000 and sentenced four others to prison terms ranging from six months to one year for trading and selling spoiled and adulterated food products that had been repackaged in new containers and given altered expiry dates.
Bahrain’s Industry and Commerce Ministry said the court rulings were issued against five defendants linked to Bahrain Pride Trading Centre, identified as Shakeel Trading.
According to the ministry, the defendants were involved in selling expired food products after repackaging them in new containers, changing their expiry dates and placing them in the establishment’s bags before distributing them in local markets.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing commercial laws and regulations and taking action against violations that could endanger consumers.
According to the court rulings released by the ministry, the first defendant, identified as Shakeel Ahmed, was fined BD100,000 in connection with the offences, in addition to a separate BD3,000 fine for other charges.
The second defendant, Kashif Su, the third defendant, Md Almoamen, and the fourth defendant, Bintu Das, were each sentenced to six months in prison.
The fifth defendant, Sabuj Lakhan, was sentenced to one year in prison.
The four expatriate defendants will also be permanently deported from Bahrain after completing their prison sentences.
The court ordered that the adulterated and spoiled food products, along with the materials and equipment used in committing the offences, be confiscated and destroyed.
The ministry also said that a summary of the final judgment, together with the evidence, will be published in two local daily newspapers, including at least one Arabic-language newspaper, at the expense of the convicted defendants.
The premises associated with the establishment were initially placed under administrative closure for six months and have since been reopened.
