MANAMA, June 28: Bahrain on Saturday strongly condemned what it described as an Iranian drone attack targeting the kingdom, accusing Tehran of violating its sovereignty and breaching the US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached earlier this month.
In a statement, Bahrain's Foreign Ministry said "a number of Iranian drones" targeted the kingdom in a "flagrant violation" of its sovereignty, endangering the security of citizens and residents. The ministry accused Iran of undermining regional peace efforts and pursuing policies that destabilize Gulf security.
The statement came hours after the United States said it had carried out airstrikes on Iranian missile, drone and radar sites in southern Iran in response to what Washington described as an Iranian drone attack on the Singapore-flagged container ship Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran later claimed it had retaliated by striking US-linked targets and accused Washington of violating the same agreement.
Bahrain said the alleged drone attack violated the June memorandum of understanding, under which Iran had committed to permanently halt military operations and respect the sovereignty of regional states.
The kingdom reaffirmed its right under international law to defend its sovereignty, security and stability, and called on the UN Security Council to ensure implementation of relevant resolutions and hold what it described as the "aggressor" accountable.
The latest exchange of accusations adds to rising tensions across the Gulf, raising concerns over the durability of the ceasefire and the risk of further regional escalation.
