Bahrain bans travellers from Ebola-hit countries as Jordan and UAE tighten health measures

MANAMA, May 19: The Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) of Bahrain has announced the suspension of entry for non-Bahraini travellers arriving from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, effective from Tuesday, May 19, in response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak and updated guidance from the World Health Organization.

According to the CAA, the decision applies to passengers arriving directly from the affected countries, as well as those who have travelled there within the past 30 days. Bahraini citizens arriving from these destinations will be subject to approved health screening and monitoring protocols upon arrival at Bahrain International Airport. The measures will remain in place for 30 days and will be reviewed based on developments in the outbreak situation.

Authorities said the move follows increasing global concern over the Ebola outbreak, with the World Health Organization warning about its rapid spread. In response, several countries have also tightened travel restrictions, while health agencies across the Gulf region, including in the UAE, have confirmed heightened preparedness and monitoring systems.

Meanwhile, international health alerts have escalated, with the United States issuing travel advisories discouraging visits to affected countries and confirming stricter entry controls linked to recent Ebola cases. Reports also indicate that at least 131 deaths have been linked to the current outbreak, while medical teams continue containment and treatment efforts in affected regions.
