KUWAIT CITY, June 30: An official in the Ministry of Awqaf was referred to the Public Prosecution for embezzling public funds after the Public Fund Crimes Unit in the Criminal Investigations General Department in the Interior Ministry caught him in the act, reports Al-Rai daily.

It has been reported that the suspect, who works in the Mosques Sector, is in charge of contracts for the maintenance of mosques. He allegedly took advantage of his position to take money which he deposited into the accounts of his staff and then asked them to give the money to him. An Egyptian employee in the sector filed a complaint at the Public Fund Crimes Unit against the suspect and he provided evidence.

A security source revealed the suspect was then put under surveillance to verify the complaint. The officer in charge of the case found out that the Minister of Awqaf referred the official for retirement and the undersecretary hindered the parliamentary intervention to reinstate him.

When the officer received a detailed report from the Egyptian employee, he obtained permission from the Public Prosecution to arrange an entrapment which led to the arrest of the official. Meanwhile, a knowledgeable source from the ministry has affirmed that although the official was referred for retirement, he will still be held accountable by the concerned authorities. He affirmed Nazaha will investigate the suspect based on the evidence presented by the complainant
