CANBERRA, Sep 3: Australia has called for the Strait of Hormuz to remain open, saying Iran’s efforts to restrict shipping through the key waterway are unacceptable.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles told ABC News Breakfast that Australia wants to see de-escalation in the Middle East, while stressing the need for the Strait of Hormuz to remain open and global fuel supply chains to return to normal. Marles said Iran’s actions to limit shipping were “unacceptable” and were fundamentally contrary to freedom of navigation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
