MUMBAI, Apr 12: India is mourning the loss of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 92, bringing to a close one of the most celebrated eras in Indian music history.
The iconic singer, whose career spanned more than eight decades and whose voice defined generations of Indian cinema, died following multi-organ failure, according to her family and medical officials.
She had been admitted on Saturday evening to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after experiencing cardiac and respiratory complications. She was being treated in the intensive care unit for extreme exhaustion and a chest infection, family members had confirmed earlier.
Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the news of her passing, while Dr. Pratit Samdani stated that she died due to multi-organ failure.
With her death, an era of Indian film music comes to a symbolic end. Bhosle was the last surviving major voice from Bollywood’s golden generation, which included Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, and Kishore Kumar—artists who collectively shaped the soundscape of Hindi cinema for more than half a century.
Over her extraordinary career, Asha Bhosle became one of the most versatile and prolific voices in Indian music, recording thousands of songs across multiple languages and genres, earning her a permanent place in the cultural heritage of South Asia.
Her last rites are expected to be conducted on Monday.
