Hollywood is undergoing a transformative change as more Arabs step into the movie industry, not just as actors, but also as writers, producers, casting directors, and directors.

LOS ANGELES, Oct 14, (Agencies): Hollywood is undergoing a transformative change as more Arabs step into the movie industry, not just as actors, but also as writers, producers, casting directors, and directors. Mico Saad, an Egyptian-American actor and filmmaker, and Hamzah Saman, the Lebanese-American president of his own casting company, are among those at the forefront of this shift.

MicoSaad, who is also a member of the Golden Globes Jury, has witnessed this transformation firsthand. After relocating from Alexandria, Egypt, to the entertainment capital of the world, the United States, he established himself as an actor and producer of several TV shows.

In the past, the primary aspiration of many was to become actors, but times have changed. Now, there is a growing desire to create blockbuster films, write compelling stories, and even direct. Saad noted that this shift has been driven in part by streaming platforms and film festivals, which have empowered more individuals to create content that matters to them.

He emphasized the increasing presence of Arabs in various roles within the industry, including producers, directors, set designers, and animators. However, there is still work to be done to fully realize the potential of Arab talent in Hollywood.

The diversification of Arab involvement in filmmaking offers a powerful means to challenge and counteract long-standing stereotypes of Arabs perpetuated in Hollywood movies. Saad pointed out that the film industry is moving away from portraying Arabs as villains and shifting focus to other topics, like the current global pandemic.

The more audiences see Arabs in diverse roles, the more these stereotypes can be dismantled, helping to present a more accurate and nuanced portrayal of Arab identity.

MicoSaad has worked alongside renowned actors such as Ricky Gervais and Anthony Hopkins. He is also known for his work in producing several short films, including “Al-Masry Life,” which received accolades at the Action on Film International Film Festival.

For Saad, his journey into acting and production was significantly influenced by growing up in Alexandria, Egypt, often referred to as the “Hollywood of the Arabs.” The rich artistic heritage of Egypt, with over a century of filmmaking, ignited his passion for the entertainment industry from a young age.

The expansion of filmmaking has not been limited to Egypt but has spread to other Arab countries over the past century, including Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Tunisia, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia.

Saad encouraged aspiring creators to take matters into their own hands rather than solely criticizing the industry. By producing content that authentically represents their experiences, they can effect meaningful change.

On the other hand, HamzahSaman, who initially pursued acting in 2006, transitioned into casting and founded his own casting company, Arab American Casting. Born in Beirut, he was inspired by his grandmother’s love for soap operas and movies and started his acting career. Recognizing the underrepresentation of Arab actors in Hollywood, he shifted his focus to casting.

Saman, a member of the Casting Society of America, has worked on various film projects, including the documentary “He Named Me Malala” and the film “Argo.” He has been working tirelessly to change the perception of Arab and Middle Eastern artists in Hollywood, contributing to increased visibility and opportunities for Arab actors.

Both MicoSaad and Hamzah Saman shared their insights on The Ray Hanania Radio Show, emphasizing the importance of empowering Arab talents in Hollywood and the film industry. Their efforts are part of a broader movement to reshape the narrative and representation of Arabs in the world of entertainment.
