Appeals cuts 7-yr jail to six years in illegal arms possession case

KUWAIT CITY, March 5: The Court of Appeals presided over by Judge Hani Al-Hamdan canceled the verdict issued by the Criminal Court which sentenced an individual to seven-year imprisonment with hard labor for illegal possession of weapons belonging to members of Special Forces. The court instead sentenced him to one-year imprisonment. According to the case file, the Public Prosecution accused the suspect of illegal possession of weapons and ammunition worth KD 780, three automatic guns and 12 bullets. The court had issued aforementioned verdict and ordered him to pay a fine of KD 1,500 as well as terminated his services. During the court session, the defense counsel Attorney Mohammad Al-Mutairi stressed that the accusations against his client are malicious.

‘Connect electricity’: The Fast Track Court has instructed the Ministry of Electricity and Water undersecretary to connect electricity to a real estate property belonging to a citizen. In the press statement of plaintiff’s lawyer, Attorney Thamer Al-Sanae, he said the order was issued without the approval of Kuwait Municipality and the court has stressed on providing electricity supply to his client’s property on a plot (600 square meters) in Sabah Al-Naser. Al-Sanae pointed out that there are families living in the property and they cannot bear neither the cold winters nor hot summers with unreliable power supply. The court also ordered the defendant to pay the legal charges.

Man acquitted of drug use: The Criminal Court presided over by Judge Ali Al-Drai’e revoked the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance which sentenced an ex-convict to four-year imprisonment with hard labor for possessing and consuming drugs. The court instead acquitted him due to illegal procedures for arresting the suspect. The defense counsel Attorney Ayed Al-Rasheedi stressed the illegality of the arrest and search procedures carried out on his client because he was not caught red-handed.

‘Fintas Group’ hearing today: The Criminal Court chaired by Judge Mohammad Ja’afar will hear the final presentations of the lawsuit filed by State Security Department against 13 suspects known as “Fintas Group” Sunday, among them lawyers, journalists and members of the royal family. The court previously listened to submissions from the State Security Department and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for five consecutive hours, and the officers affirmed that Sheikh Khalifa Al-Athbi transferred a specific sum to a Britishbased company, while the first suspect received KD 20,000 cash from the second suspect in Mishref area apparently to promote their activities in recorded clips via his social media account due to his large following. The first suspect actually carried out the needful, and seven other suspects were accused of conducting some foreign money transfers.
