Another LPG Price Hike Leaves Indian Families Paying the Price

NEW DELHI, Jun 7: India has increased domestic cooking gas prices for the second time since the outbreak of the Iran conflict, amid rising import costs and mounting losses for state-owned fuel retailers, according to a Bloomberg report.

The government raised the price of a standard 14.2-kilogram LPG cylinder by 29 rupees nationwide, taking the retail price in New Delhi to 942 rupees. Households receiving direct government subsidies will also face higher costs following the latest revision.

India, which imports around two-thirds of its LPG needs and sources the majority of those supplies from the Middle East, has been hit by higher energy costs as regional tensions disrupt supply chains. Government data shows the cost of supplying a domestic LPG cylinder has climbed to about 1,600 rupees, significantly above current retail prices even after the increase.

The latest hike adds to inflationary pressures on consumers, who have already faced multiple increases in diesel and gasoline prices in recent weeks. Analysts say the move highlights the growing economic impact of the Iran conflict on major energy-importing nations across Asia.
