KUWAIT CITY, Oct 1: In less than 72 hours, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry raided yet another factory and caught workers red-handed for thawing frozen meat before distributing the same to various markets, cooperative societies, and restaurants as fresh product, reports Al-Rai daily.
Reliable sources told the daily the confiscated meat weighed approximately one ton. The sources added that the “Commercial Control” inspectors, after receiving information conducted a field inspection tour and caught the workers removing the meat from the original packaging, thawing the product, and repackaging it to mislead consumers.
The Ministry of Commerce found an operations room inside the factory where the meat data was changed to read fresh instead of frozen complete with a new label to cheat consumers.
The sources pointed the same procedure was applied to cartons of frozen chicken, which were then placed in new containers, and labeled as fresh and refrigerated. This is in addition to minced meat coming from Asia that had been thawed and packaged in new containers and sold as fresh products.
The sources pointed the inspectors also discovered that the company in violation of the law was extending the expiry dates of products.
