Amrabat says he will not play for Morocco under Wahbi

RABAT, Sept 9: Sofyan Amrabat has said he will not return to the Moroccan national team while Mohamed Wahbi remains head coach, although he has opted not to reveal the reasons behind his decision.

The Ajax Amsterdam midfielder said that representing Morocco remains the greatest honor of his career and stressed that his commitment to his country has never changed.

“Representing Morocco is the greatest honor of my career. Since receiving my first call-up 12 years ago, I have given everything for my country and worn the national team shirt with pride. My love for Morocco and everything this team represents will never change,” Amrabat said.

The 30-year-old, who has earned 78 international caps, described the decision as extremely difficult but said he could not continue playing for the national team under the current coach.

“I do not feel able to continue representing the national team under the current coach. Therefore, I am not available to join the team as long as he remains in his position,” he said.

In a statement posted on his official Instagram account, Amrabat clarified that he has not retired from international football and has not ruled out representing Morocco again in the future.

Wahbi took charge of Morocco in March, replacing Walid Regragui. Under his leadership, however, the Atlas Lions failed to match their run to the semifinals at the 2022 World Cup, exiting the latest tournament in the quarterfinals.
