‘Kuwait mostly imports from East Asia and India’

KUWAIT CITY, March 28: The country has ample supply of food products – most of which are imported from East Asia and India, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting a reliable source from Kuwait Ports Authority (KPA). This came after KPA advised shipping companies and agents to inform the authority about changes in the dates of cargo ships’ arrival in the country, such that the necessary measures are taken to avoid any delay in the supply of goods and food products as it happened when the MV Ever Given – a giant Evergreen container ship – got stuck at Suez Canal and blocked marine movement due to the bad weather conditions recently.

The source pointed out that since Kuwait imports most food products from East Asia and India, it has been able to guarantee ample food supply as ships from the aforementioned countries do not pass through the Suez Canal. He said the ships from the United States of America, including South America, might be delayed for a few days as they avoided passing through the Suez Canal. He added the goods from European countries will be delayed as well, indicating that 80 percent of European imports are equipment and devices.

According to the source, KPA’s advisory to the shipping companies and agents is aimed at determining the actual number of ships arriving in Kuwait. He said the local ports will most likely face problems due to the simultaneous arrival of ships, as this causes congestion which could delay the delivery of goods by at least two days. The source revealed that KPA has coordinated with ports in the United Arab Emirates, specifically Jebel Ali Port, which has been designated for re-export and a station for giant ships from various parts of the world. From there, the goods and foodstuffs are re-exported to Kuwaiti ports using medium and small ships, he concluded.
