Last Thursday the Dutch football team played the Canadian team during the FIFA’s Women’s World Cup in France. Frans Potuyt, Ambassador of The Netherlands and Louis-Pierre Émond, Ambassador of Canada, watched the match live together with their staff, and with Kuwaiti women football players!

Women have played football for centuries, however the popularity of women football in currently rapidly increasing. Why is that? Dutch Sport journalist Bert Wagendorp states that in women’s football there is more room to play and therefore the focus on technical football skills is enhanced. The vibe at the current World Cup has been tremendously positive and the large crowds have been happy with the quality of the games.  The increase in popularity of the game set in motion a series of changes. “When I first joined the national team, no one cared, no one paid attention.

You couldn’t make a career playing the sport unless you were on the US team,” Canadian team captain Sinclair said in an interview. “So I’m proud to be a part of the change.” Rising salaries, sponsorships and more and more leagues to play in. Women football is on the rise!

These are some of the reasons why The Netherlands Ambassador and Canadian Ambassador decided to organize a viewing party with the players in Kuwait! Women football in Kuwait is also growing at a rapid pace.

The upcoming GCC Women Football Cup will be hosted in Kuwait and teams are preparing for training camps in Europe.

Fatema Masoud Hayat, Chairman of the women’s committee of the Kuwait FA, is happy with these developments and is looking forward to exchange knowledge with coaches and trainers internationally.
