ALGIERS , Aug 24: Algeria's Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said on Tuesday that his country has decided to sever diplomatic ties with Morocco. In a press conference, the minister said that such a decision comes due to historic and political disputes. The minister went on to blame the step on Morocco's interference in his country's internal affairs. However, Lamamra emphasised that "under any circumstances, no harm would come to Algerian nationals residing in Morocco and Moroccans residing in Algeria." The consulates of both countries will also continue to operate in a regular manner, he further stated, with their focus solely their "consular work, without any mission beyond this narrow framework."
