KUWAIT CITY, Aug 26: Ahmed Abdullah Al-Raddan is one of Kuwait’s most influential sports supporters, known for sponsoring major clubs like Al-Qadsiya and contributing to farewell ceremonies for national team stars. He has also left a lasting impact by supporting community and youth sports initiatives, alongside his prominent role in economics and investment.
Al-Raddan believes sports reflect a nation’s culture and inspire widespread public enthusiasm. He emphasizes that his involvement is driven purely by patriotism, without personal gain or ambitions for official positions.
In an exclusive interview, Al-Raddan outlined steps to develop Kuwaiti sports, stressing that everyone has a national responsibility to support young athletes and national teams. He describes sports as a “trust upon all of us” and highlights youth investment as the foundation for the future of Kuwaiti athletics.
Private Sector: A True Partner
Al-Raddan sees the private sector not merely as a financial contributor but as a key partner in shaping the future of sports. “Everyone has a national responsibility to support our youth and national teams,” he says. “Sports represent Kuwait on the international stage.”
No Ambition for Positions
He reiterated that he is not pursuing positions within federations or clubs. “Sports need a real shake-up to remove conflicts and personal disputes,” he said, emphasizing that collective, sincere efforts are the only way to restore sports to its rightful place.
Al-Qadisiya: A Lifelong Passion
Al-Raddan’s support for Al-Qadisiya Club stems from deep affection. “Supporting Al-Qadisiya and organizing farewell events for club and national stars, like Amir Matooq, is the least I can do for Kuwaiti sports,” he noted.
He also invests in youth development through sponsorship of tournaments, including the Kuwaiti Academy League, stressing that nurturing young talent is key to the future of sports.
Reviving Al-Qadisiya’s Glory
He praised the current club management, saying they have worked tirelessly across all sports despite occasional setbacks. “Returning Al-Qadisiya to its golden era requires unity among its leaders, reliance on homegrown talent, and strong fan support,” he explained, noting that the club boasts Kuwait’s largest fan base.
Sports Law: A Window of Hope
Al-Raddan is optimistic about Kuwait’s new sports law: “If implemented as planned, it could mark the true return of Kuwaiti sports to its golden era.”
However, he called for essential amendments, particularly regarding term limits, to ensure leadership rotation and prevent monopolization. He emphasized that achievement and performance should be the primary criteria for continuity.
National Team Needs Patience and Professionalism
Regarding the national team, he stressed the need for patience, long-term planning, and full professionalism. “Success is difficult without grassroots development that feeds into the first team,” he said.
A Valuable Legacy
Al-Raddan follows in the footsteps of his father, Abdullah Al-Raddan, drawing inspiration and support from his family. “My father instilled in us love for Kuwait and loyalty to its leadership. I will continue supporting Kuwaiti sports in every way possible. This is a national duty before a personal commitment,” he affirmed.
Message to the Private Sector
Concluding his remarks, Al-Raddan addressed the private sector: “Sports are a trust upon all of us. Supporting them is a national duty first and foremost, and an investment second. Sports showcase Kuwait internationally and build capable, ambitious youth.”
