Al-Nassr sets historic scoring record despite Al-Ittihad defeat

RIYADH, Sept 6: Al-Nassr made history despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Al-Ittihad in the fifth round of the Saudi Roshn League, scoring for a record 92nd consecutive league match.

Angelo Gabriel netted Al-Nassr’s only goal, extending the Riyadh club’s remarkable scoring streak to 92 games — the longest in the history of the competition.

The last time Al-Nassr failed to score was on December 1, 2023, when it was beaten 3-0 by traditional rival Al-Hilal.

The defeat also ended Ange Postecoglou’s perfect start as Al-Nassr coach. The Australian had guided the team to victories in its opening four league matches and its King’s Cup Round of 32 ties before Al-Ittihad halted their winning run.

Despite the setback, the opening five-match run marked the best start of Postecoglou’s coaching career at a club.

The 61-year-old had endured early defeats during previous coaching spells. While in charge of South Melbourne, he lost his opening match against Brazilian side Vasco da Gama at the 2000 Club World Cup. Later, during his time at Greek club Panachaiki, he suffered a 4-0 defeat to Kastoria in his second match in charge.

In today’s Roshn League action, Al-Hilal hosts Neom, while Al-Khaleej takes on Al-Riyadh.
