Yasser Al-Misehal

RIYADH, June 29: Yasser Al-Misehal has resigned from his position as President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation following the national team’s exit from the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement posted on his account on “X,” Al-Misehal said: “After seven years of serving as President of the Saudi Football Federation, I, along with my colleagues on the board, have exerted every effort to serve Saudi football and meet the expectations of our nation and fans. However, the national team’s failure to progress in the World Cup falls short of our shared ambitions, and I take full responsibility for that outcome, offering my apologies to all who expected better results.”

He added that stepping down was part of his belief in allowing space for a new phase of leadership. He confirmed that procedures would be initiated to open nominations for a new board in accordance with the federation’s regulations.

“I may be leaving my position, but I will remain committed to serving my country and supporting the development of Saudi sport,” he said, thanking supporters and apologizing for any shortcomings, while expressing hope for a stronger future for Saudi football.

Al-Misehal began his tenure in 2019, during which Saudi Arabia participated in two FIFA World Cups and reached the Round of 16 at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
