Al-Ittihad set to test Al-Nassr’s perfect start

RIYADH, Sept 3: Al-Nassr will put its perfect start to the Saudi Roshn League and its title ambitions on the line tomorrow when it visits Al-Ittihad in a blockbuster fifth-round clash at Alinma Stadium in King Abdullah Sports City, Jeddah.

The defending champion has won all four of its matches so far and sits second on goal difference behind Al-Hilal, who has also maintained a 100 percent record.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains Al-Nassr’s main attacking threat. The Portuguese star became the club’s all-time leading scorer in the league with 104 goals after netting in the 2-1 win over Al-Taawoun last round, moving past Mohammed Al-Sahlawi’s previous record of 103.

Al-Ittihad represents Al-Nassr’s toughest test so far in its bid to retain the title. The Jeddah club, however, has made an inconsistent start, dropping four points after two draws. Its latest came against Al-Fateh, with the teams playing out a goalless draw that left Al-Ittihad fifth in the standings.

Other matches will see Al-Taawoun host Al-Fateh, while Al-Faisaly faces Al-Hazem.

The fifth round began yesterday, with today’s schedule featuring Al-Ahli against Al-Riyadh and Al-Shabab against Al-Hilal.

Al-Hilal will aim to remain top when it takes on city rival Al-Shabab. Despite strengthening their squad during the summer transfer window, Al-Shabab are still waiting for their first victory of the season and face a formidable challenge against an Al-Hilal side riding high after its emphatic win over Al-Ahli.

English forward Ollie Watkins made an impressive debut for Al-Hilal after coming off the bench and scoring the third goal in Tuesday’s victory.

“I’m very happy with my debut and the win, and I’m looking forward to seeing you more at the stadium this year. Your support was absolutely amazing,” Watkins said in comments published by the club’s official website.
