Al-Durra Co to recruit domestic labors from four new countries

Bid to resolve shortages, recruitment costs

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 21: The Al-Durra Home Employment Company will soon begin recruiting domestic workers from four new countries including Burkina Faso, Vietnam, Nepal and Ethiopia in an effort to resolve the crisis of labor shortage and reduce the cost of recruitment, reports Al-Rai daily.

The sources pointed out the company is in the advanced stage of negotiations to bring new laborers from the Philippines, and is waiting to conclude contracts as per the new system introduced by the Philippines government which is being made applicable according to which one month salary must be paid in advance before the domestic helper enters the country which basically means the employee will not be paid salary for the first month of work.

The sources said open discussions with Burkina Faso need some final touches and the expected price of recruitment is about 590 dinars, while the domestic helper shall receive a salary between 70 to 80 dinars.

The source added, the company has almost completed the agreement with Ethiopia and the price of recruitment is about 380 dinars and a salary of about 80 dinars. The sources stressed that Al-Durra is working hard to “open the door to bring domestic workers from countries that were earlier not exploited by Kuwait at an appropriate financial cost in coordination with the various bodies concerned and in accordance with the controls and conditions that comply with the laws of the country and the agreements signed in this regard with other countries.”

The Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Minister of State for Economic Affairs Hind Al-Sabeeh recently announced that she will visit six or seven Asian countries to discuss bringing in domestic workers noting that the list includes Laos, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Vietnam and the Philippines to agree on costs and salaries.

In another development, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, and Minister of State for Economic Affairs Hind Al-Sabeeh disclosed that the major aspect of the communiqué issued after the board meeting of the Arab Labor Organization affirmed carrying out a complementary study that will exploit the natural synergy between education products and labor market needs in a way that serves the youth and society, reports Al-Anba daily.

The minister declared that Kuwait attaches special importance to the issue and has included it in the development projects of the developmental plan. She explained the purpose of the study is to ensure synergy between education products and the labor market needs, especially in relation to employing people with special needs- with focus on technical and vocational education. Also, there should be an alignment between the study and professions that are now evolving due to alternative energy, humanitarian works and nano systems, she said.
