Chairman of the Kuwait Winter Games Club, Fahid Al-Ajmi

KUWAIT CITY, June 21: Chairman of the Kuwait Winter Games Club, Fahid Al-Ajmi, has said that the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) approval for Kuwait to host the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship (Division IV) reflects the country’s strong international standing in sport.

Al-Ajmi explained that the tournament, which was previously postponed this year due to regional conditions, marks an important opportunity for Kuwait to reaffirm its ability to organize major global sporting events.

Speaking to reporters after the club’s general assembly meeting, he said preparations will begin early to ensure the successful delivery of the championship scheduled for next March, adding that the aim is to present the event in a way that highlights Kuwait’s positive image internationally.

He expressed pride in the confidence shown by the international federation and leading hockey nations in granting Kuwait hosting rights, noting that such events also contribute to the development of the sport locally. He stressed that this achievement reflects the continued support of the state for Kuwaiti sports.

Al-Ajmi also highlighted the club’s ongoing development plans across its five winter sports: ice hockey, figure skating, curling, speed skating, and skating. He said the club is working on organizing domestic competitions and specialized training camps for each discipline.

He added that the upcoming season will begin in September with the launch of the national ice hockey league, alongside other local tournaments, with a focus on raising the technical level of athletes across all winter sports.

The general assembly concluded by approving the administrative and technical reports for the past fiscal year.
