TEHRAN (AP), Apr 1: An airstrike in Tehran on Wednesday morning appears to have struck inside the former U.S. Embassy compound, according to witnesses in the area.
The compound, located on Taleghani Street, has been under the control of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard since the Iran hostage crisis. It is currently operated in part by the Basij, which uses the site for various activities, including an anti-American museum.
Witnesses reported blown-out windows around the large compound but said there were no visible signs of an external missile impact, suggesting the strike may have occurred inside the compound.
There was no immediate official confirmation from Iranian authorities on the extent of the damage or possible casualties.
The embassy compound remains a symbolically sensitive site, having been at the center of the 444-day hostage crisis in which American diplomats were held until Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, succeeding Jimmy Carter.
