LONDON, Jul 10: Cybersecurity experts are warning that criminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to launch more sophisticated cyberattacks, making it easier to target businesses and organizations worldwide.

According to a report by Finland's public broadcaster Yle, Finnish cybersecurity officials say the threat level remains high, with phishing, ransomware, account theft and supply-chain attacks among the most common risks.

Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at cybersecurity company Sensofusion, said AI has made cybercrime more efficient by enabling attackers to generate malware, craft convincing phishing emails, identify potential victims and automate parts of their operations.

"AI writes better Finnish than most Finns," Hypponen said, noting that even complex languages are no longer a barrier to online scams.

Anssi Kärkkäinen, director general of Finland's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-FI), said AI is making cyberattacks "easier, cheaper and more convincing," particularly when criminals impersonate trusted individuals or organizations.

However, he stressed that AI is only one factor behind the growing cyber threat, pointing to financial incentives, weak cybersecurity practices and the expanding number of internet-connected systems.

Separately, cybersecurity firm Check Point Software Technologies reported an increase in cyberattacks targeting Finland compared with the same period last year, with the education, research, public administration and telecommunications sectors among the hardest hit.

Experts urged organizations to strengthen their cyber defenses by keeping software updated, continuously monitoring networks and maintaining secure data backups.
