NEW DELHI, Jun 15: India has issued directions to restrict access to social media platform Telegram ahead of a crucial medical college entrance examination scheduled for June 21, following the cancellation of an earlier test over allegations of a paper leak.
The federal National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the examination, informed social media platform X on Tuesday that the restrictions were being implemented for a “defined and limited period ending June 22.”
The move comes as authorities prepare for the re-conduct of the undergraduate medical entrance examination after the original test was scrapped last month amid allegations that question papers had been leaked before the exam.
The controversy triggered widespread protests by students across India, with candidates demanding accountability and a fair examination process.
The re-examination is being held for nearly 2.3 million registered candidates seeking admission to undergraduate medical programs across the country.
Officials have not provided detailed information on the specific Telegram channels or accounts targeted under the restrictions, but the platform has previously been used by groups to circulate examination-related material, including in cases involving alleged leaks.
The temporary restrictions are aimed at preventing the spread of unauthorized examination content and protecting the integrity of the re-scheduled test, authorities said.
The medical entrance examination is among India’s most competitive tests, with millions of students competing annually for limited seats in medical colleges. The latest controversy has intensified scrutiny over examination security, digital platforms, and measures taken to prevent malpractice.
