TEHRAN, Jun 28: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday called for the creation of a new regional security framework that excludes outside powers, shortly after Iran launched attacks targeting Bahrain and Kuwait following US strikes.
Speaking in Baghdad, Araghchi said security in the Persian Gulf should be managed by countries in the region themselves, arguing that regional states should take responsibility for maintaining stability.
He welcomed Iraq’s proposal for dialogue between Iran, Iraq, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), describing regional talks as a pathway toward addressing security concerns.
Araghchi also addressed the conflict in Lebanon, saying the war should end under the first clause of the reported US-Iran memorandum of understanding. He accused the United States of bearing responsibility for Israeli attacks and the withdrawal process in Lebanon.
His comments came amid heightened regional tensions following Iran’s missile and drone attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, which were condemned by Gulf states as violations of sovereignty and threats to regional security.
