ADNOC vessel targeted by missile in Strait of Hormuz, UAE condemns attack

ABU DHABI, Aug 8: A vessel operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) was targeted by a missile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz early Saturday, according to the UAE state news agency WAM.

ADNOC said no injuries were reported and that the situation had been brought under control. The company did not immediately provide details about the vessel, its cargo or whether it sustained any damage.

The UAE government strongly condemned what it described as an Iranian missile attack on the ADNOC vessel, calling it a “blatant violation” of UN Security Council Resolution 2817.

The UAE Foreign Ministry stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and protecting commercial shipping in international waterways. It said using the Strait of Hormuz as a means of “economic pressure or blackmail” by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) posed a direct threat to regional stability and global energy security.

Abu Dhabi called on Iran to halt such attacks, fully comply with the cessation of hostilities and allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen “fully and unconditionally.”

The incident comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the strategic waterway, through which a significant share of global oil and gas shipments passes. Any disruption to commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could have wider implications for regional energy supplies and international markets.
