Abrupt removal of Abdali Agricultural Market amids licensing controversy

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 30, (Agencies): Yesterday morning, the agricultural products market adjacent to the Abdali Cooperative Society was cleared by municipal bulldozers. An official municipality source informed the market stalls were situated on state-owned property and were operating without an official license. Additionally, a significant number of workers were reported to be unemployed, with some found to be in violation of residency regulations.

The source clarified that the majority of products available in the market were imported, cautioning against any attempts to reopen the market due to potential legal consequences. Market supervisor Ahmed Al-Arada claimed the market had been overseen by the Abdali Farmers Association for seven years. Its purpose was to showcase Kuwaiti farm products at competitive prices, with the approval of the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs.

Al-Arada noted that municipal bulldozers removed the stalls without prior notice. He refuted claims that the market’s proximity to a mosque or its location on the air ambulance landing strip led to its removal. Stressing that the market had been in its current location for seven years and was far from the mentioned areas, he explained that the ongoing construction nearby was related to a hall affiliated with the Kuwaiti Farmers Union.
