Abdaly border comeback underway

KUWAIT CITY, July 25: Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah announced the reopening of Abdaly border crossing to passenger and commercial traffic within 48 hours. In a joint press conference held in Basra, Iraq – with Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani in attendance, Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef affirmed that the relationship between Iraq and Kuwait is strong and unchanged. He said the Abdaly border will reopen within 48 hours to welcome the Iraqis and allow Kuwaitis to enter Iraq, in addition to the resumption of trade between the two countries.

He asserted that regardless of any developments between Kuwait and Iraq, the two countries will remain neighbors and brothers. He stated that the reciprocal visits will continue in a bid to prevent any party from damaging the relationship between the two brotherly nations and to nip any discord in the bud. He stressed that his relationship with Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani is one of friendship and brotherhood. On the other hand, Al-Eidani stated that Iraq warmly welcomes the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Kuwait and his accompanying delegation, who visited his country through the Safwan border crossing. He pointed out that this visit confirms that Iraq is a country of love and peace towards its brothers in the Gulf states, especially Kuwait. He emphasized that relations between the two countries are built on brotherhood and shared interests.

Al-Eidani also affirmed the Iraqi and Kuwaiti governments’ commitment to continue their joint efforts to enhance regional stability, and address security challenges and conflicts in the region. He confirmed the ongoing coordination and communication between the two sides to overcome any obstacles or individual errors that may occur, and to strengthen relations between the two brotherly peoples. Moreover, the Ministry of Interior issued a press statement, indicating that Sheikh Fahd Al-Yousef discussed a number of issues of mutual interest with Al-Eidani, foremost of which are the most recent security developments in the region.

The ministry disclosed that the two officials looked into various aspects of cooperation between the two sides and ways to fortify security coordination. At the end of the visit, Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef inspected the Abdaly border crossing, where he saw the extent of the damage caused by the Iranian attack. He then instructed the concerned authorities to quickly assess the damage and take the necessary measures to reopen the border as soon as possible, and in a way that ensures the return of traffic to normal and serves the interests of the two countries. Separately, Head of the General Administration of Customs (GAC), Yousef Al-Nuwaif, accompanied by Vice President for Ports, Investigation and Customs Search Saleh Al-Omar, inspected the Al-Abdaly border crossing following the Iranian attack, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

According to an official statement issued by GAC, Al-Nuwaif and Al- Omar reviewed the damage caused to the Al-Abdaly Customs Center and received a briefing from field officials on the impact of the attack and the measures taken to address the situation. Al-Nuwaif praised GAC personnel for their efforts in carrying out their duties and maintaining the smooth flow of customs services despite the exceptional circumstances. He reaffirmed GAC’s commitment to continuing operations at all border entry points, implementing necessary security measures, and ensuring the continuity of customs services in coordination with relevant authorities.
