A Woman Walking Home Alone Is Not an Invitation: Kuwait Must Wake Up to the Harassment Women Face

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 12: A female African expatriate working in Kuwait has spoken out after allegedly being stalked by a man in his car while she was returning home from work, raising wider concerns over harassment faced by women, particularly foreign domestic and service workers, in public spaces.

In a video shared online, the woman said she noticed a man repeatedly following her vehicle after she left work. She claimed he contacted her by phone and continued driving behind her even after she attempted to distance herself from him.

According to her account, the man repeatedly passed by her and then followed her again. She said he eventually asked her how much she wanted, which she interpreted as an inappropriate and offensive proposition.

The woman said she considered confronting the man and threatening to call the police. She eventually crossed the road and continued walking, saying the move made it more difficult for the driver to follow her.

In her emotional account, she also spoke about what she described as a broader problem faced by Black women in Kuwait, saying some people treat African women disrespectfully because of their race or nationality.

Her allegations could not be independently verified, and it was not immediately clear whether a police complaint had been filed or whether authorities had identified the alleged perpetrator.

The incident has nevertheless sparked discussion about the need to address harassment of women in public places and ensure that all residents and expatriates are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity or skin colour.

Harassment, unwanted pursuit and inappropriate advances can leave victims feeling unsafe, particularly when they are alone while travelling to or from work. Women who experience such incidents should be encouraged to seek assistance from the authorities and report serious or repeated harassment.

Kuwait is home to a large expatriate population from numerous countries, and respect for every member of society — whether Kuwaiti or expatriate — remains essential to maintaining a safe and respectful community.

No woman should have to feel unsafe simply because she is walking home from work.
