KUWAIT CITY, Nov 8: A rare watch signed by George Daniels and Roger Smith was sold for a record price of $2.4 million at an auction held at Sotheby’s in Geneva, which confirms the strong demand for the products of independent British watchmakers.

Bloomberg News Agency indicated that the white gold Millennium watch, produced in 2001, bears the names of the late George Daniels, who is considered the greatest British watchmaker in the modern era, and his student at the time, Roger Smith, who currently produces watches in his name, reports Al-Rai daily.

It is noteworthy that this watch is the latest unit of the Millennium model and was owned by Smith personally until he sold it in 2008 for 100,000 pounds ($124,000) to help finance his own watchmaking project. This watch was also the first wristwatch to bear his name.

The agency added that the price of the watch at the auction amounted to 2.18 million Swiss francs ($2.4 million), which is considered the highest price for a Millennium watch, and the highest price for watches bearing the signature of Roger Smith.

“It was truly amazing to attract interest in the sale of this piece from all over the world,” Smith said in an interview after the auction. “This watch seems to have taken a path of its own,” he said, adding that selling the watch in 2008 was a very difficult decision.

It is noteworthy that Daniels launched the Millennium watch series to showcase his invention of the coaxial escapement unit, an innovation that improves accuracy and is now used in many of the best watches of the famous Swiss brand Omega.
