Netflix teams up with Mojang Studios to create animated ‘Minecraft’ series.

LOS ANGELES, May 30: Netflix and Mojang Studios are teaming up to bring the popular sandbox video game “Minecraft” to life in an animated series. The streaming giant announced the development of the project, which promises to offer fans a fresh perspective on the beloved game.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, Netflix revealed that the series will introduce audiences to a brand-new story with original characters, offering a unique take on the immersive world of “Minecraft.”

Produced in CG-animation format, the series is being developed in collaboration with WildBrain, the renowned Canadian studio behind other animated Netflix hits like “Sonic Prime,” “Ninjago: Dragons Rising,” and “Carmen Sandiego.” WildBrain’s repertoire also includes the revival of the beloved series “Johnny Test,” along with popular shows like “The Snoopy Show” and “Fireman Sam.”

Since its inception by Mojang in 2011, “Minecraft” has captivated millions worldwide with its distinctive pixelated graphics and open-world gameplay, allowing players to construct endless virtual landscapes using colorful blocks. With over 140 million active monthly players, “Minecraft” has expanded its universe with spinoff titles such as “Minecraft: Story Mode,” “Minecraft Earth,” “Minecraft Dungeons,” and “Minecraft Legends.”

But the Netflix series isn’t the only storytelling venture in the pipeline for Mojang. The studio, under the ownership of Microsoft, is also working on a feature film in partnership with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Set to premiere on April 4, 2025, the “Minecraft” movie boasts a star-studded cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Emma Myers, with Jared Hess directing.

The announcement of the Netflix series coincided with Mojang’s celebration of the 15th anniversary of the original “Minecraft” game, signaling a new chapter in the game’s expansive universe for fans to explore and enjoy.
