A child killed every 10 minutes in Gaza, warns WHO chief

GENEVA, Nov 12, (Agencies): In a chilling revelation to the United Nations Security Council, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus disclosed that, on average, a child loses their life every 10 minutes in the Gaza Strip. Expressing grave concerns, Tedros emphasized that nowhere and no one in the region is safe from the ongoing violence.

Tedros painted a dire picture of the healthcare system in Gaza, revealing that half of the 36 hospitals and two-thirds of primary healthcare centers are non-operational. The facilities that are still functioning find themselves overwhelmed, with the healthcare system described as being “on its knees.” Hospital corridors are reportedly crowded with the injured, sick, and dying, while morgues are overflowing. The situation is so dire that surgeries are being conducted without anesthesia, and tens of thousands of displaced people are seeking shelter in hospitals.

Tedros highlighted the grim reality by stating, “On average, a child is killed every 10 minutes in Gaza.” Since October 7th, the WHO has verified over 250 attacks on healthcare in Gaza and the West Bank. In contrast, there have been 25 attacks on healthcare in Israel. Israel argues that Hamas uses hospitals to hide weapons in tunnels, a charge vehemently denied by Hamas.

The situation in the Gaza Strip is dire, with the conflict taking a severe toll on the civilian population and the already fragile healthcare system. The international community faces the challenge of addressing the humanitarian crisis and finding a sustainable resolution to bring peace to the region.
