‘Up vaccination for citizens, expats … illegals’

KUWAIT CITY, March 27: In the midst of the spike in infections and the registration of 1,390 new cases, two deaths, and 247 recovering in the intensive care, consultant Of Internal and Epidemiological Diseases at Al-Adan Hospital, Dr. Ghanem Al-Hujailan, suggested that “more than 90% of the current infections are due to the mutated virus, which explains the very high number of infections.

Al-Hujailan said in a statement to Al-Seyassah daily, the mutant is the main reason for the emergence of the second wave of “Covid 19”, explaining that “the herd immunity is ineffective with this type of virus, and will continue for a maximum of three months in about 80% of infection cases. After the expiration of the three-month period, most of them are infected again and said he receives between 30 and 50 phone calls every day from people who are healthy, some of whom inform him of their infection again and consult him as to how to deal with the disease. He stressed that the vaccination process against Covid-19 in Kuwait is very slow, and stressed on the need to take necessary measures to accelerate the pace of vaccination by doubling the number of vaccination centers and the diversity in the sources and types of vaccinations and opening the door to vaccination in the private sector, just like what the neighboring countries have done. “We are surprised that a country such as Bahrain which has fewer inhabitants than Kuwait has 27 vaccination centers and has succeeded in vaccinating about 42% of its population, while Kuwait has so far vaccinated only 11.81 percent of its population.

Regarding what is being said about the AstraZeneca vaccine, Al-Hujailan said it is safe and suitable for young age groups and healthy people under the age of 65 years, pointing out that it gives 80% protection, and for age groups over the age of 65 years and heart patients and chronic diseases, the Pfizer- Biontech vaccine suits them because it gives 95% protection. Al-Hujailan stressed on the need for diversification and expansion in importing vaccines by direct contracting through the state itself and not through local agents, as is the case in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, since direct contracting contributes to providing a greater number of vaccines and reaches faster, so the state must take the necessary measures to import vaccination without seeking the help of agents or ‘middle men’ since this is a national security issue.

Regarding the possibility of the person who received the vaccine being infected with the virus, he explained the incubation period lasts in most cases between 5 to 7 days, while it extends to about 14 days in a small number of patients, and these may be vaccinated during the incubation period of the disease while they do not know so they get infected again, and some cases may become ill without knowing due to the absence of symptoms and receive the vaccine during infection, and these also may become ill again, and they are a small group. Al-Hujailan stressed the need to expand the vaccination of citizens and residents in the country, including the violators of the residence law, whose number has reached 100,000 people, stressing that vaccinating these people helps to protect the community and eliminate disease.
