GENEVA, June 30: The United Nations' maritime agency has said guarantees from Iran that vessels will not be targeted are needed before a safe evacuation operation can begin for more than 8,500 seafarers stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, told CNN that the organization was ready to act immediately upon receiving assurances that evacuation vessels would not be attacked.

"Once the reassurance comes back that no vessel that is being evacuated will be targeted, we are ready to react immediately," Dominguez said.

He also called for urgent demining operations in the strategic waterway to allow shipping traffic to gradually return to normal.

Meanwhile, Iran said it does not see a need for foreign intervention in matters related to the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran did not need involvement from other countries, including France, regarding the strait.

Baghaei said Iranian officials were scheduled to meet Qatari representatives in Doha on Wednesday to discuss details of a memorandum of understanding and the release of blocked Iranian assets.

He added that Iran had no plans to hold meetings with U.S. officials at any level in the coming days.
