MEXICO CITY, July 17: A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico's southern Pacific coast on Friday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for coastal areas, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at 8:48 a.m. local time (1448 GMT) and was centered about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) north of Puerto Madero in the southern state of Chiapas, near the border with Guatemala.
The epicenter was located offshore in the Pacific Ocean, close to the busy port city of Puerto Madero. Following the earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued as authorities monitored the potential for hazardous sea waves along the coastline.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, while emergency agencies continued assessing the impact of the powerful tremor. Authorities urged residents in coastal areas to remain alert and follow official safety instructions as aftershocks and possible tsunami risks were evaluated.
