KUWAIT CITY, Sept 8: The Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Khaled Rashad, with Judges Abdulhadi Al-Hajri and Abdulaziz Al-Maadadi as members, sentenced a former senior official at the Ministry of Interior to seven years in prison with hard labor, dismissed him from his position, and ordered him to repay 1,293,700 dinars and 600 fils, in addition to fining him double that amount, on two related charges.
The case concerns a tender for the maintenance of border cameras, the supply and installation of an underground invisible system, and the maintenance of networks and equipment. The court also sentenced a foreign defendant in absentia to seven years in prison with hard labor and ordered his deportation after serving his sentence. The court decided to refrain from sentencing seven other defendants, including a former senior official, requiring each of them to provide a financial guarantee of 500 dinars and pledge to maintain good conduct for one year.
The case included charges of facilitating the embezzlement of public funds, harming national interests, forgery, and dereliction of duty. The court had previously overturned the Public Prosecutor’s decision to dismiss the case and ordered the defendants to stand trial based on the observations contained in the State Audit Bureau (SAB) report regarding the contracts in question. In its reasoning, the court emphasized that a public employee holding a leadership position at the country’s borders bears more than an administrative responsibility, as they are entrusted with safeguarding public funds and protecting national security.
