RIYADH, Nov 17: At least 45 people are feared dead after a bus carrying Umrah pilgrims collided with a diesel tanker near Medina in the early hours of Monday, sparking a massive fire that engulfed the vehicle. According to local Saudi media, 42 of the victims are believed to be Indian nationals, many reportedly from Hyderabad.

The tragic crash occurred around 11 pm IST near Mufrihat, as the group was travelling from Makkah to Medina after completing their Umrah rituals. The impact of the collision caused the bus to erupt in flames, leaving little chance for passengers to escape.

The Indian Consulate in Jeddah has activated a 24x7 control room to support affected families and has issued a toll-free helpline: 8002440003. Officials said they are coordinating with Saudi authorities and monitoring the situation closely.

Further updates are expected as rescue operations and identifications continue.
