36 years of resilience, one unshaken Kuwait - Cabinet reviews school readiness

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 4, (KUNA): Kuwait’s Cabinet on Tuesday reaffirmed that the 36th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion remains a defining chapter in the nation’s history, honoring the sacrifices of the Kuwaiti people, paying tribute to the country’s leaders and martyrs. This came in the Cabinet’s weekly meeting, chaired by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

Following the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Shereedah Al-Maousherji said the Cabinet recalled with deep sorrow the treacherous crime committed by the former Iraqi regime at dawn on August 2, 1990. He said that the Cabinet stressed that the invasion will forever remain a testament to Kuwait’s national unity and a landmark event through which successive generations remember the great sacrifices made by Kuwaitis in defense of their homeland and sovereignty. It also praised the pivotal roles played by the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the late Amir Sheikh Saad Al- Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al- Jaber Al-Sabah, and the late Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, in leading efforts that culminated in the liberation of Kuwait from the occupation.

The Cabinet also expressed pride in the resilience of the Kuwaiti people and their heroic sacrifices in confronting the Iraqi aggression. It also renewed Kuwait’s profound appreciation and gratitude to all brotherly and friendly countries that contributed to the liberation of Kuwait and the restoration of its legitimate sovereignty. On the other hand, the Cabinet strongly condemned the continued Iranian attacks targeting Kuwait, describing the drone strikes on vital facilities, including a government installation in northern Kuwait and civilian vehicles on Bubiyan Island, as a flagrant violation of the country’s sovereignty, a direct threat to its security and stability, and a serious breach of international law, the UN Charter, principles of good neighborliness and UN Security Council Resolution 2817.

The Cabinet affirmed that the continued attacks represent a dangerous escalation reflecting a hostile approach that cannot be justified or accepted, warning that such actions undermine regional security and stability while further heightening tensions. It reiterated Kuwait’s inherent and legitimate right to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty, security, national interests, resources and the safety of citizens and residents.

The Cabinet also condemned attacks carried out by Iran-backed militias in Iraq against Saudi Arabia, including the attempted drone strike on oil facilities in the Kingdom’s Eastern Province last week, describing the assault as a blatant violation of Saudi sovereignty and a threat to its security and territorial integrity. It renewed Kuwait’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and support for all measures taken to protect its security, sovereignty, interests and resources, including its legitimate right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, stressing that Saudi Arabia’s security is an integral part of the security of Kuwait and the GCC states.

The Cabinet further renewed its condemnation of the recent Iranian missile attack targeting Jordan, describing it as a flagrant violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and a threat to regional security and stability. It reaffirmed Kuwait’s full support for Jordan and all measures it takes to preserve its security and sovereignty while calling for an end to such attacks and respect for international law and principles of good neighborliness. The Cabinet also strongly condemned the attack on Egypt involving a drone strike that ignited fires aboard two vessels at Damietta Port last week, reaffirming Kuwait’s full solidarity with Egypt and support for all measures taken to safeguard its sovereignty, security and national interests.

During the meeting, Defense Minister Sheikh Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah briefed the Cabinet on the latest regional military developments following the recent Iranian attacks against Kuwait, affirming the armed forces’ continued readiness to carry out their duties efficiently. Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah also briefed the Cabinet on the Foreign Ministry’s diplomatic efforts and Kuwait’s missions abroad to address regional and international developments. He informed ministers of the outcomes of his official visit to Islamabad last Wednesday, where he met Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, senior ministers and top officials. During the meetings, Sheikh Jarrah conveyed greetings from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al- Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al- Ahmad Al-Sabah to Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The discussions reviewed the longstanding relations between Kuwait and Pakistan, explored ways to strengthen cooperation across various fields and addressed regional developments and efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting security and stability.

Sheikh Jarrah expressed Kuwait’s appreciation for Pakistan’s active diplomatic role in supporting regional security and discussed bilateral cooperation and regional issues with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. The Cabinet also reviewed a presentation by Education Minister Sayed Jalal Sayed Abdulmohsen Al-Tabtabaei on preparations for the 2026/2027 academic year. The Cabinet also reviewed the report of the Ministerial Committee for Public Services, including the Public Authority for Housing Welfare’s progress report on government agencies’ implementation of infrastructure and public services for housing projects during the periods June- December 2025 and January-June 2026. The Cabinet tasked the authority with continuing coordination to overcome obstacles affecting housing services and submitting a semiannual report detailing implementation progress and each entity’s level of commitment. It also decided that “To Whom It May Concern” certificates for building permits would not be issued to the Kuwait Municipality and the Credit Bank until infrastructure and essential services in residential areas are fully completed.

The Cabinet further reviewed the government’s Environmental Sustainability Reporting Initiative, which aims to establish a unified framework requiring government entities to issue annual environmental performance reports in line with Kuwait’s international environmental and climate commitments. It tasked Minister of State for Development and Sustainability Affairs Dr. Reem Ghazi Al-Fulaij, who oversees the Environment Public Authority, with coordinating implementation of the initiative, following up on government entities’ compliance and submitting an annual report to the Cabinet outlining progress, institutional performance and recommendations. The Cabinet also approved several items on its agenda and referred others to the relevant ministerial committees for further study and recommendations.
