KUWAIT CITY, Oct 2: Kuwait authorities have uncovered a case involving the alleged exploitation of a charitable project to collect in-kind donations and resell them for personal profit, resulting in the arrest of five suspects, the Ministry of Interior said.
The Criminal Security Sector, represented by the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said the suspects include three Syrians and two Egyptians.
Investigations by the Jahra Governorate Criminal Investigation Department, through the Sulaibiya Investigation Office, revealed that a furniture-moving company had rented a website and telephone number belonging to a charitable organization's donation project through one of its employees, without the knowledge of the organization's members.
According to the ministry, the suspects allegedly used the website and telephone number to receive donations of clothing, electronics, furniture and food by misleading donors into believing that their contributions would support the charitable project's objectives.
The suspects allegedly collected the donations through several representatives before misappropriating them and selling them in local markets or exporting them abroad for financial gain, instead of using the proceeds for the purposes for which the donations had been collected.
Investigators found that the alleged activity was repeatedly carried out under the cover of the charitable project, generating estimated monthly profits of around KD60,000, according to the ministry.
Authorities also identified the company's warehouse in the Amghara area, where necessary measures were taken concerning the seized items.
The Ministry of Interior said the required legal procedures have been completed against those involved.
