BANGKOK, Nov 24: A family in Bangkok has launched a frantic search for three gold bars valued at 2 million baht (approximately RM255,000 or over USD 60,000) after their elderly mother, who suffers from dementia, accidentally discarded them in household waste.
The son recounted that on Monday, 3 November, his mother had taken the gold out to inspect it and placed it inside an envelope for safekeeping, only to forget about it shortly after. The following morning, while rushing to gather trash for the arriving collection truck, she mistakenly threw the valuable envelope into one of the bin bags.
The loss was only discovered on Wednesday, 5 November, when the woman decided she wanted to sell the gold. By the next day, she recalled placing the bars in the envelope and realized they had likely been discarded.
On Friday, 7 November, the family filed a police report and rushed to the waste disposal site. However, a district officer informed them that trash bags are not sorted and that waste from their area is incinerated daily. Feeling “completely in the dark,” the family has not given up hope and believes someone may have picked up the bars. They have reached out to a well-known volunteer group to publicize their plea.
Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage, including images from garbage trucks, and the family is requesting access to onboard cameras along the disposal route. The son has also urged police to interview waste collectors and trace the collection route in hopes of locating the envelope.
The family has offered a cash reward and a token of appreciation to anyone—including sanitation workers—who might have unknowingly picked up the gold and is willing to return it. Despite the odds, they continue to hold out hope for a fortunate recovery.
