3 dead, 35 injured in Serbia bus crash

BELGRADE, Oct 18, (Xinhua): Three people were killed and 35 others injured on Friday when a bus carrying factory workers overturned on a regional road near the northern Serbian city of Sremska Mitrovica, authorities said. According to the Serbian Ministry of Interior, the bus transporting workers of a healthcare equipment manufacturer veered off the road and flipped onto its roof around 2:45 p.m. local time.

The crash occurred between Sremska Mitrovica and the nearby village of Jarak, about 70 kilometers northwest of Belgrade. Two people died at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries in hospital. Emergency services dispatched six medical teams to the site, and 35 passengers were treated at Sremska Mitrovica General Hospital.

Vojislav Mirnic, a hospital official, told local media that most of the injured sustained serious wounds. One patient was transferred to the clinical center of Vojvodina in Novi Sad for further treatment. Police and emergency crews remained at the scene late Friday, alongside a public prosecutor overseeing the investigation. The bus driver was detained for 48 hours pending further questioning, officials said.
