SÃO PAULO, June 14: A 21-year-old woman died after falling from a bridge during a bungee jump in Limeira, São Paulo state, when she was reportedly thrown off without being properly attached to a safety cord, Brazilian media reported.

The victim, identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a Physical Education graduate, fell approximately 40 metres (130 feet) from the Ponte do Esqueleto bridge, located between Limeira and Cordeirópolis, on Saturday.

According to reports, the jump was organized by activity operators who allegedly failed to secure the safety rope to her harness before she was launched from the structure. Witnesses said critical safety checks were skipped prior to the jump, resulting in the fatal fall.

Video footage circulating on social media showed the moment she was carried to the edge of the abandoned bridge and pushed off, with the safety rope left unsecured on the ground. Witnesses can be heard reacting in shock as they realized the cord had not been attached.

Emergency services, including firefighters and SAMU, confirmed her death at the scene due to multiple traumatic injuries. Her fiancé was reportedly present and witnessed the incident.

Authorities said several individuals linked to the organizing groups were detained shortly after the incident, while some attempted to flee into a nearby wooded area before being apprehended with the assistance of police helicopters.

Six people have been arrested in connection with the case, including three who were present at the site. The case has been registered as homicide, and investigations are underway into safety violations and the lack of regulation at the abandoned structure used for the activity.

Local reports also stated that the victim had posted a light-hearted message on social media shortly before the jump, joking about the experience.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine criminal responsibility.
