U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers are currently operating in the Arabian Gulf after transiting the Strait of Hormuz in support of Project Freedom

DUBAI, May 4: Two US-flagged merchant vessels have successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz under protection provided by US naval forces, according to the US Central Command (US Central Command), as tensions continue in one of the world’s most sensitive maritime corridors.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, CENTCOM said US Navy guided-missile destroyers are currently operating in the Persian Gulf as part of “Project Freedom”, a mission aimed at supporting and restoring the safe flow of commercial shipping through the region.

The command confirmed that both vessels completed their passage safely and are continuing their onward journeys after crossing the strategic strait, which connects the Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and is a critical route for global energy and trade flows.

CENTCOM added that US forces remain actively engaged in assisting efforts to ensure maritime security and uninterrupted commercial transit in the area.

Expanded rules of engagement reported

Meanwhile, US media outlet Axios reported that the rules of engagement for American forces operating in the region have been updated, authorizing them to respond to immediate threats against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the report, US forces may now take action against potential threats such as Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fast-attack boats or missile positions if they are deemed to pose an imminent risk to commercial vessels transiting the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and recent developments underscore rising military and security tensions in the region as international naval forces increase their presence to protect commercial maritime traffic.
