2 killed, 3 injured in vehicle pileup in Japan's Saitama

TOKYO, Nov 13, (Xinhua): Two people were killed and three others injured early Thursday in a five-vehicle collision involving a large truck and several passenger cars on an expressway in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, local media reported.

The accident occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. local time. Police said the large truck first rear-ended a passenger car, triggering a chain reaction that involved a compact car and two other trucks, according to national broadcaster NHK.

Two men in the compact car were pronounced dead at the scene, while three other men sustained injuries but remained conscious, according to the report. The 50-year-old truck driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in injury. Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
