DALIAN, Jun 24: Chinese authorities have detained two Japanese nationals in Dalian on suspicion of attempting to smuggle processed rare earth products out of China, according to sources familiar with Japan-China relations.
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said at a press conference on Wednesday that Chinese authorities had informed Tokyo that the two individuals were detained on May 18 and May 25, respectively. They are suspected of violating laws related to the smuggling of goods prohibited from import or export.
Kihara said both detainees were in good health and that the Japanese government would handle the matter appropriately.
“We will appropriately respond to this situation to protect Japanese nationals,” he said.
China maintains strict controls over the export of rare earth materials, which are used in a wide range of high-tech products and defense-related equipment.
The detentions come amid strained relations between Tokyo and Beijing. Ties deteriorated after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made remarks in the Diet last year regarding a possible contingency involving Taiwan.
In January, China’s Commerce Ministry tightened export controls to Japan on dual-use products, including rare earths, which can be used for both civilian and military purposes. In February, Beijing also announced an embargo on dual-use products targeting 20 Japanese companies and organizations.
The latest incident is expected to raise concerns among Japanese companies operating in China, particularly those involved in industries dependent on rare earth materials and other controlled exports.
