PESHAWAR, Oct 15: At least 17 students were killed when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, on Thursday, according to local media reports.

All the children killed were aged 13 or younger, Lady Reading Hospital spokesperson Muhammad Asim said, according to Pakistani newspaper Dawn.

The hospital declared an emergency following the incident, he said.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi earlier said rescue personnel had transported around 20 people, including students and teachers, to hospitals for treatment.

Rescue teams were conducting an operation at the site, with further details about the circumstances of the collapse awaited.

Building collapses are a recurring problem in Pakistan, where concerns have been raised over the enforcement of safety regulations and the quality of construction materials.

In June, 14 children were killed when the roof of a private tuition centre collapsed in the Kahna area of Lahore.
