Kuwait to revoke citizenship in 90 cases following Nationality Law review.
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 21, (Agencies): The Supreme Committee on Kuwaiti citizenship announced on Thursday the revocation of citizenship for 1,647 individuals, with the matter now referred to the Cabinet for final approval. This decision came during a meeting chaired by Acting Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah. Recent statistics reveal that over 1,800 individuals whose citizenship was revoked had previously received the KD30,000 construction subsidy, typically granted to housing plot owners. Authorities are currently determining the number of those who received housing loans of up to KD70,000 from Kuwait Credit Bank (KCB).
Officials at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry are auditing the list of individuals affected by the citizenship withdrawal, focusing on identifying construction subsidy beneficiaries. A detailed report will be submitted to the relevant authorities, who will then decide on necessary measures. These may include halting subsidy disbursements for those whose citizenship was revoked before receiving support or partially suspending payments if installments have already been disbursed. In a related development, approximately 4,000 beneficiaries, including their family members, have had their access to state subsidies suspended due to the citizenship withdrawal decisions. This suspension extends beyond financial assistance to include other entitlements such as food subsidies, affecting both personal and family benefits across various state agencies and banks. The ongoing citizenship review process reflects Kuwait’s efforts to address concerns related to nationality acquisition and state benefits, with significant implications for those affected by these decisions.
