Himig ng Bayani - The OFW Songwriting Competition finalists

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 4: Sixteen original compositions have been selected as finalists in Himig ng Bayani – The OFW Songwriting Competition, an initiative by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) that celebrates the sacrifices, courage and inspiring stories of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). The competition provides a platform for Filipino songwriters to express, through original music, the experiences, struggles, aspirations and enduring hopes of millions of Filipinos working far from home. In ensuring fairness and equal opportunity for all participants, organizers implemented a strict blind selection process from submission to evaluation.

The identities of the songwriters were withheld, with entries identified only through assigned numbers. Judges evaluated each composition solely on its originality, creativity, musicality and message, without knowing the names or identities of the people behind the songs. The process underscored the competition’s commitment to recognizing genuine artistry and ensuring that every entry received an equal opportunity to qualify on its own merits. Following the selection process, 16 compositions emerged as finalists.

They are:

1. Ako’y Nagtagumpay – Marla Batolina Berioso
2. Babangon Ako – Sandralyn Lagas
3. Bayani Noon – Francisco Jubilo Jaranilla
4. Buhay Mo, Buhay OFW – Charisse Bautista
5. Hindi Ako Susuko – Liezel Zamudio Peralta
6. Inang Kadama – Rondi Nelli Quito Cabiton
7. Kumusta Na Kabayan – Cristina J. Andes
8. Luha Ng Pag-asa – Joshua Rei Morante
9. Magiting Na OFW – Jimyna Duatin Mondala
10. Malayo Na, Malayo Pa – Arthur Macabenta Lelix Jr.
11. Padayon Lang Bai – Jadewyn M. dela Rosa
12. Pangako sa Disyerto – Henry K. Tacaisan
13. Sa Gitnang Silangan – Ronald Martinez Bustria 14. Sa Isang Bahagi Ng Mundo – Roberto Martinez Garcia 15. Sa Likod Ng Ngiti – Vincent Ortega
16. Uuwi Rin Ako – Gil Guevarra

The titles reflect different dimensions of the OFW experience, including perseverance, homesickness, sacrifice, family ties, resilience and the dream of returning to the Philippines. Each composition carries a personal narrative that seeks to give voice to the millions of Filipinos who have left their families behind in pursuit of better opportunities.

Kiko “Kikx” Salazar

Adding star power to the much-anticipated grand finale is renowned Filipino music producer and songwriter Kiko “Kikx” Salazar, who will serve as one of the judges. Salazar is the creative force behind several popular Filipino songs, most notably Morissette’s hit ballad “Akin Ka Na Lang.” His songwriting and production credits also include “Magandang Dilag” by JM Bales, “Diwata” by Sam Concepcion, “Power” by Morissette, and “Dalangin” by Tim Pavino, among other collaborations with prominent OPM artists. A multi-awarded music producer, Salazar brings considerable experience in songwriting, music production and the Philippine music industry to the judging panel.

The competition will reach its climax at the Grand Finals on Nov 20 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Kuwait, where the 16 finalists will showcase their original compositions before the audience and judges. With the blind selection process ensuring that talent and artistry take center stage, the grand finale promises to bring the stories behind the songs to life.

More than a songwriting competition, Himig ng Bayani is a tribute to the modern-day Filipino heroes whose sacrifices, determination and contributions continue to inspire their families and communities back home. As its message emphasizes, every song has a story and every melody has a voice. At the grand finale, the music will speak, the stories will come alive, and the best will rise.
