LUCKNOW, Jun 22: At least 12 students were killed after a fire broke out in a building in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, officials said.
The blaze occurred in the Aliganj area of Lucknow, the state capital. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak told reporters that most of the victims were between 16 and 18 years old.
According to Pathak, the students were inside an animation center located in the building when the fire erupted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the tragedy and said rescue operations were underway, with authorities providing all possible assistance.
“Anguished by the loss of lives in a fire mishap in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. My condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest,” Modi’s office said in a post on X .
Eyewitnesses said several people jumped from the building as flames spread through the premises, which reportedly housed both a pet clinic and a student training center, according to the Press Trust of India.
Authorities are continuing rescue and relief efforts, while the cause of the fire has yet to be officially confirmed.
